A dal prepration rich in butter,with auniwue aroma of smoked charcoal.It gives a taste as the dish is prepared on charcoal earthen stove.

Ingredients Serving: 4

  1. Arhar (tur)dal 1 1/2 cup.
  2. Moong dal 1/2cup.
  3. onion paste 1/2cup.
  4. ginger _garlic pasye 2table spoon.
  5. Red chilly powder 1table spoon.
  6. turmeric powder 1tea spoon.
  7. Garam masala powder 1table spoon.
  8. tomato puree 1cup.
  9. Chopped tomato.1/2cup.
  10. butter 1/2cup.
  11. Khatai pieces 4.(if khatai is not available ,u may use amchur powder.)
  12. salt 1table spoon.
  13. For Tampering:
  14. butter 50 grams.
  15. cumin seeds 1table spoon.
  16. ginger chopped 1table spoon
  17. garlic chopped 1table spoon.
  18. Green chillies chopped 1table spoon.


  1. Wash and soak dals for 30 minutes.
  2. Take both dals in a pressure cooker,add 1/2table spoon salt,khatai pieces, 2cups water and pressure cook on high for one whistle.
  3. Further cook on mediu flame for 2_3whistles.
  4. Let pressure release itself.
  5. Heat a fry pan/wok.add butter .
  6. Add onion paste and fry on medium flame till golden.
  7. Add ginger garlic paste,red chilly powder,turmeric powder and garam masala powder.fry on low flame till butter separates.add 1/2table spoon salt.
  8. At this stage add tomato puree.mix well.add alittle water and cook for 2minutes,add chopped tomatoes and mix well.
  9. Now our gravy is ready,add boiled dal and mix into the gravy.adjust the consistency by addind more water or dry if required.
  10. Now put a small cup in the dal ,burn acharcoal,keep in the cup,pour1tea spoon ghee over the charcoal,smoke arrives,close the lid immediately to avoid the escape of smoke.
  11. Leave for 5minutes.
  12. Meanwhile prepare tampering for dal.take a tampering pan/fry pan .add butter .
  13. When butter melts add all the ingredients mentioned for tampering.fry for one minute on low flame.
  14. Discard charcoal from dal and pour the tampering over dal.serve hot with rice/chapatis.
