ABOUT Tangy Green Tomato Dal(unriped) RECIPE

Unripe tomatoes will be pale green all over, feel nearly solid and will have a more acidic or tart flavor.  Green tomatoes are a part of Southern Food Culture, they are often served in south Indian restaurants. They are quite tasty.

Ingredients Serving: 4

  1. Unriped tomato 6
  2. Tur dal 1/4 cup
  3. Chana dal 1 tab sp
  4. chilli powder 1 tsp
  5. Daniya powder 1 tsp
  6. Haldi powder 1tsp
  7. Hing powder 1 pinch
  8. Ghee 1 tsp
  9. Oil tsp
  10. Mustard seed 1tsp
  11. Fenugreek seed 1/4 tsp
  12. Udid dal 1/4 tsp
  13. Red chilli 1(split into 2 pieces)
  14. Curry leaves few

Instructions

  1. Pressure cook both dal with 1/4 tsp turmeric powder.
  2. Heat 1 tsp oil in a pan, add raw tomato wdges ,haldi powder ,chilli powder,daniya powderand salt.
  3. Saute until tomatoes become soft and raw smell goes.
  4. Add cooked dal, and mix well.Add a little water to get Koottu consistency. Adjust the salt to taste.
  5. Cook on high for 2 minutes. Add a tsp of wheat or rice flour in a bowl ,add little water and make thick paste and add to kootu. It helps the kootu thick and taste. Cook for 2 min. Transfer to a serving bowl.
  6. Heat 1 tsp ghee and add the mustard seeds,fenugreek seeds and red chilli.
  7. when the mustard crackles add the curry leaves. Add  the seasoning to the koottu.
  8. Serve hot with rotis,phulkas or rice.
