    Ingredients to make Vatha Kulambu

    • 2 cups water
    • tamarind -Lemon sized ball
    • 1 tbsp Sambar powder
    • 1 tsp jaggery grated
    • 1/4 tsp turmeric powder
    • 2 tbsp oil
    • 1 tsp urad dal
    • 1 tsp cumin seeds
    • 1/2 tsp methi seeds
    • 1/2 tsp mustard seeds
    • 10 shallots chopped finely
    • 8 garlic cloves chopped finely
    • 2-3 curry leaves

    How to make Vatha Kulambu

    1. Soak the tamarind in warm water. Add sambar powder, turmeric powder and salt to this and keep aside.
    2. Heat oil in a kadai, add mustard seeds. Once it splutters, urad dal, methi seeds and cumin seeds. Saute until golden brown.
    3. Add the onions, garlic and curry leaves to this. Saute for a few minutes.
    4. Pour in the tamarind mixture with 1/2 cup of water and bring to boil.
    5. Add jagerry and boil until it becomes thick. Add water for desired consistency.
    6. Serve with Appalam/rice.
