ABOUT Vatha Kulambu RECIPE

It is close to Srirangam and is often served with roasted appalam. It is prepared with vegetables, sambar powder and other spices!

Ingredients Serving: 4

  1. 2 cups water
  2. Tamarind -Lemon sized ball
  3. 1 tbsp Sambar powder
  4. 1 tsp Jaggery grated
  5. 1/4 tsp Turmeric powder
  6. 2 tbsp oil
  7. 1 tsp Urad dal
  8. 1 tsp cumin seeds
  9. 1/2 tsp Methi seeds
  10. 1/2 tsp Mustard seeds
  11. 10 shallots chopped finely
  12. 8 garlic cloves chopped finely
  13. 2-3 curry leaves


  1. Soak the tamarind in warm water. Add sambar powder, turmeric powder and salt to this and keep aside.
  2. Heat oil in a kadai, add mustard seeds. Once it splutters, urad dal, methi seeds and cumin seeds. Saute until golden brown.
  3. Add the onions, garlic and curry leaves to this. Saute for a few minutes.
  4. Pour in the tamarind mixture with 1/2 cup of water and bring to boil.
  5. Add jagerry and boil until it becomes thick. Add water for desired consistency.
  6. Serve with Appalam/rice.
