ABOUT Puliodharai / Tamarind rice RECIPE

Tamarind rice is a popular dish of tamilnadu. Its served as prasadam in most of the south Indian temples. And Ideal for travel too.

Ingredients Serving: 4

  1. 2 cups cooked rice
  2. 1/4 cup gingelly oil
  3. Lemon size tamarind soaked
  4. Salt to taste
  5. Small piece of jaggery
  6. For tempering-
  7. 1 tsp mustard seeds
  8. 1 tbsp bengal gram
  9. 1/2 tbsp white lentil / urad dal
  10. 3 tbsp peanuts
  11. 2 sprig of curry leaves
  12. 2 red chilli
  13. 1 tsp turmeric powder
  14. 1 tsp Asafoetida
  15. For dry roast & grind ( spice powder )
  16. 1 tsp fenugreek
  17. 1 tbsp bengal gram
  18. 1 tsp black sesame seeds
  19. 1 tsp Coriander seeds
  20. 2 red chillies

Instructions

  1. Soak the tamarind in hot water for 10 minutes and extract pulp.
  2. Dry roast all the items separately (given under roast and powder) once cooled powder it in mixer.
  3. Heat the oil in pan Put peanuts . Roast it over low flame.
  4. Add mustard seeds , Bengal gram , urad dal, Asafoetida ,red chillies , turmeric powder, curry leaves and saute it for a minute or until evenly turned brown colour
  5. Add the tamarind pulp ,salt jaggery and boil for 10 minutes.
  6. Now add the spice powder and boil for another 5 minutes or till the oil separates, turn off the flame.
  7. Once cooled add the rice and mix gently till the rice is nicely coated with puliodharai mix, check salt and add if needed.
  8. Tastes best at least after an hour.
  9. Tastes yum with fried banana , potatoes or papad.

I love tamarind rice ......I normally use the ready-made mix by MTR but I'll try this out now..:thumbsup::thumbsup:
