ABOUT Senai Kizhangu Pachadi | Elephant Yam Raita RECIPE

This raita is my grandmother's signature dish. We just love to have it as a dipping with Paruppu Usli. Elephant Yam is very high in fiber and good for health.

Ingredients Serving: 4

  1. Karuani Kilangu /Elephant Yam – 250 g
  2. Green chili – ½ from long size chili
  3. Ginger - 1 thin slice
  4. Chopped Coriander leaves – 3 tbsp
  5. Salt – to taste
  6. Yogurt – 1 cup
  7. Oil – 1 tsp
  8. Hing – pinch
  9. Musturd – 1.5 tsp
  10. Urad Dhal – 1.5 tsp

Instructions

  1. Peel the skin of yam and chop them into medium size cubes.
  2. Add water to cover the yam and steam them in pressure cooker for 3 whistles.
  3. Add coriander leaves, chili, ginger and yam into a mixer. Strain the water before adding yam but do not throw the water. Grind the mix.
  4. Start to garnish separately. Take a small kadai, add oil, hing. Once hot, add mustard and let it splutter.
  5. Add urad dal to the garnished mix.
  6. Mix Yogurt, coriander-yam mixture , salt into a container. Add the remaining water which was used for steaming yam and give them a mix.
  7. Add the garnished items to the raita.
