Onion Thoran

Ingredients to make Onion Thoran

  • onions 4
  • curry leaves-2 sprigs
  • green chillies 3
  • coriander 2 sprigs
  • Mozzarella cheese as per choice
  • Black pepper and White pepper as per taste
  • hing a pinch
  • Garam masala a pinch
  • turmeric a pinch
  • Chicken masala a pinch
  • salt as per taste
  • mustard seeds 1 tsp
  • coconut shavings/small chunks a few

How to make Onion Thoran

  1. Heat oil in kadai, splutter mustard seeds and add curry leaves.
  2. Add chopped onions and fry until it turns translucent.
  3. Add all the powders mentioned along with salt except coriander.
  4. Now close the kadai with a lid and simmer it. As our elders always says food cooked on low flame tastes far better then on high flame. So let us follow it.
  5. Now once it turns completely brown and mushy, add coriander along with mozzarella cheese. Close the lid and turn the stove off. The heat will make the cheese melt. I have added little so it is not evident in the picture.
  6. But if someone prefers it to be more cheesy, please go ahead and add more.
  7. Serve hot.
  8. Coconut is not mandatory. As I mentioned it can be added to enhance the taste.

My Tip:

Take fresh onions. Stale ones takes longer time to cook and will have sort of raw taste as compared to fresh onion which have a sweet taste. Add cheese towards the end else the texture will be lost. We can cook it in a simple way with less masala powder but I prefer it to be a little spicy and masaledaar. Cook according to your taste buds. You can add raw eggs to the above mixture and make egg bhurji also ready.
