A protein rich South Indian breakfast dish made with Black rice along with the regular rice.

Ingredients Serving: 5

  1. 1 cup Black rice/ Kavuni arisi
  2. 1 cup raw rice
  3. 1/2 cup Channa dal
  4. 1/2 cup toor dal
  5. 1/2 cup split green moong dal
  6. 1/2 cup Urad dal
  7. 4 red chilies[adjust to taste]
  8. A large knob of ginger
  9. 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
  10. A large pinch of asafoetida powder
  11. salt to taste


  1. Take all the rice ,dal varieties ,chilies in a large bowl. Add enough water to soak , cover and let it sit over night.The next morning / after 8 hours, drain and discard the water. Take the dal in a mixie jar.Add a large knob of ginger
  2. Grind to a smooth batter, adding water little by little. You may have to grind them in batches. Transfer the batter to a bowl and add salt. cumin seeds, asafoetida powder and mix well.
  3. Heat a griddle and pour a ladle full of batter in the center and spread it to a circle. Spread some chopped onion, sprinkle some lentil spice mix and a little coriander. Cover and cook on low flame for a few minutes till done.
  4. Serve hot with a side of your choice.
