Excellent side dish for idli and dosai varieties..

Ingredients Serving: 5

  1. Sesame oil 100 ml
  2. Shallots/ small onions 1/4 kg
  3. Mustard 1 tsp
  4. Asafetida 1/2 tsp
  5. Fenugreek powder 1/2 tsp
  6. Turmeric powder 1/2 tsp
  7. Red chilli powder 2tsp
  8. Thick extract from goosbery sized tamarind
  9. Powdered jaggery 1 tblsp
  10. Salt to taste..


  1. Cut the small onions into halves and grind into a slightly coarse paste..
  2. Heat oil in pan...add mustard and allow to crackle
  3. Add asafetida.. Then add one by one onion paste,tamarind juice, turmeric, red chilli powder, and salt...allow to boil in a low flame..
  4. Stir well till nice aroma comes and oil oozes from it..
  5. Add powdered jaggery and stir well..
  6. Finally add fenugreek powder and stir for 2 minutes.. Switch off the stove..allow to cool..shallot chutney/thokku ready..
