About Matar Ka Nimona Recipe

A dish widely prepared in Uttar Pradesh, this traditional UP Style Matar Ka Nimona is made using peas and just a few spices. This is a soupy curry which goes well with rice or paratha. Make it with the most tender winter peas while they are in season. Here is how to make this matar recipe Matar ka Nimona or fresh peas curry.

Matar Ka Nimona

Ingredients to make Matar Ka Nimona

  • 2 cups fresh green peas
  • 1 large potato, peel & cut in cubes
  • 1 Medium onion, Finely Chopped
  • 1 medium tomato, roughly chopped
  • 6-8 garliccloves
  • 1 inch ginger
  • 1/2cup fresh green coriander + for garnish
  • 2-3 green chillies
  • 2 bay leaves
  • 1/2 tsp cumin seeds
  • 1/4 Tsp asafoetida
  • 1/2 tsp turmeric powder
  • 1 tsp garam masala powder
  • salt as per taste
  • 2 tbsp mustard Oil

How to make Matar Ka Nimona

  1. Roast the fresh green peas in 1 tsp oil for 3-4minutes. Let it cool. Keep aside a fistful of whole green peas & coarsely grind th rrest
  2. Grind tomatoes, garlic, ginger, fresh coriander & green chillies to a fine paste
  3. In a pan heat mustard oil until it reaches smoking point. Turn off the flame & wait for 2-3minutes.
  4. Again turn on the flame, add potato cubes & fry them until its light golden in colour.
  5. Remove on an absorbent paper & keep aside until further use.
  6. To the same oil, add cumin seeds, asafoetida & bay leaves. Saute for 30-45 seconds
  7. Next add the finely chopped onion. Saute until its golden brown.
  8. Then add the tomato-coriander paste & turmeric powder. Saute on medium flame until moisture evaporates & oil starts to separate.
  9. Next add the coarse green peas along with the whole peas. Roast this for around 3-4 minutes.
  10. Add 2 cups of water & bring it to a boil.
  11. Add some salt &cover the pan with a lid. Cook this for about 10-12 minutes. *Fresh peas wont take long time to cook.
  12. Finally add fried potatoes & garam masala. Adjust salt.
  13. Mix & simmer for another 5 minutes. Garnish with fresh coriander leaves.
  14. Serve hot with roti or rice.

My Tip:

You can use frozen peas instead of fresh peas.
