ABOUT Kachhi Imli Ki Khatti Daal.. RECIPE

Kachhi imli or raw tamarind daal is a super duper comfort food of all times. This particular daal is my aunt in law's favourite one and i make it a point to serve her this whenever she visits me. Simple comfort food made with raw tamarind, pigeon pea lentils and tomatoes. That's it. It's that simple and serve this with some pickle, poppadums and any dry sabzi of your choice. The colour itself is an added attraction. Happy Cooking!

Ingredients Serving: 7

  1. Pigeon pea lentils 2 cups
  2. Kachhi imli or raw tamarind 100gm
  3. Turmeric 1 tsp
  4. Red chilli powder 1 tbsp
  5. Green chillies whole 2
  6. Curry leaves 1/4 cup
  7. Coriander leaves finely chopped 1/4 cup
  8. Tomatoes chopped 4
  9. Salt to taste
  10. Ginger garlic paste 1 tsp
  11. FOR TEMPERING ; Oil 3 tbsp
  12. Cumin seeds 1 tbsp
  13. Dry red chillies 4-5

Instructions

  1. Pressure cook lentils with turmeric, green chillies, ginger garlic paste and tomatoes until done.
  2. Meanwhile boil raw tamarind with 2 cups of water for 5 minutes.
  3. Squeeze the juice out of it using a strainer pressing down with a wooden spatula.
  4. Open the lid of the cooker after the pressure settles down.
  5. Add the tamarind water to it and bring it to a rolling boil at first.
  6. After it starts boiling vigorously, simmer on a medium high heat for 15 minutes.
  7. Add curry leaves and chopped coriander too.
  8. Finally add the hot tempering to it after adjusting salt.
  9. Serve hot and enjoy!
