ABOUT Dal Tadaka RECIPE

Dal is the most common dish cooked in most household in India. This simple nutritious dish can be made in numerous ways and in different combination. One such is Dal Tadaka, in which a simple tadka brings out the aromas and flavor in the dish.

Ingredients Serving: 4

  1. For the Dal:
  2. Moong Dal - 1cup
  3. Onion - 1 (small)
  4. Tomato - 2
  5. Garlic cloves - 8
  6. Coriander leaves - few
  7. Turmeric powder - 1/4th tspn
  8. Chilly powder - 1/2tspn
  9. Salt - according to taste
  10. For the Tadaka:
  11. Mustard seeds - 1/2tspn
  12. Cumin seeds - 1/2 tspn
  13. Red chilly - 2
  14. Curry leaves - 1sprig
  15. Onion - 1 cut to fine slices

Instructions

  1. Soak moong dal for 10 to 15 minutes. In a cooker add the dal, to this add finely chopped tomatoes, garlic, onion pieced and coriander leaves, turmeric powder and chilly powder. 2 to 3 cups water. Cook for 5 whistles.
  2. Once the cooker cools down, give dal a single stir with ladle. Add salt.
  3. In a cooking pan, take some oil, once it's heated add mustard seeds. Let it crackle. To this add cumin seeds, red chillies, curry leaves and fine cut onion slices.
  4. To get a nice even golden shade in tadaka, fry on medium to low flame.
  5. Meanwhile heat the dal to required consistency and put it in a serving dish. Once the tadka is ready, pour it on the dal.
  6. Garnish with coriander leaves and few drops of lemon (optional). Serve hot with roti or rice.
