ABOUT Mixed Lentils Khatti Daal... RECIPE

Three lentils have gone into making this lovely looking daal which is an innovative take on the famous Khatti Daal of Hyderabad. Easy to make and is done quickly too. Pigeon Pea Lentils, Red Lentils and Yellow Lentils are used by me in this delicious comfort food of all times. This can be enjoyed with ghee, pickle and poppadoms for a lovely meal anytime you want to eat something divine. Happy Mealtimes!

Ingredients Serving: 10

  1. Pigeon pea lentils 1 cup
  2. Red lentils 1 cup
  3. Yellow lentils 1 cup
  4. Salt to taste
  5. Ginger garlic paste 1 tbsp
  6. Green chillies 2
  7. RED CHILLI POWDER 1 TBSP
  8. Turmeric 1 tsp
  9. chopped tomatoes 3
  10. Tamarind water 2 cups (lemon sized tamarind ball soaked in 1 cup water)
  11. FOR TEMPERING : Curry leaves 10
  12. oil 2 tbsp
  13. cumin seeds 1 tbsp
  14. Dry red chillies 3-4
  15. Garlic sliced thinly 2

Instructions

  1. Pressure cook lentils with turmeric, red chilli powder, green chillies and chopped tomatoes along with ginger garlic paste.
  2. Add water as required. Do not add much. Soak these for a minimum of 2-3 hours.
  3. Open the lid after the pressure settles down.
  4. Add tamarind water to it along with curry leaves.
  5. Adjust salt and allow it to simmer on a medium high heat.
  6. Finally add the hot tempering to it just before serving.
  7. Use ghee for tempering to give it an authentic flavour and aroma.
