Ingredients Serving: 4

  1. Black gram 1cup
  2. Idli semolina 3cup
  3. salt
  4. Spinach, straberries, Termeric, Ragi flour-for coloring idlis
  5. Sufficent water to cook
  6. Cooking oil 2table spoon


  1. Soak black gram in water for 3 hours,, drain the water -add fresh water and paste it using mixer grinder.
  2. Put little lukewarm water to idli semolina, add the blackgram paste -mix well, ferment the batter for 6 hours.
  3. Add salt to the fermented batter mix well, grease the oil to the idli stand plates -put batter steam for ten minutes. Hot idlis are ready to eat.
  4. To make colr designer idlis, take the white batter in four small cups- add termeric and stir well to get yellow color. Add ragi flour to another cup to get chocolate color.
  5. Add straw berry paste to batter in cup to get pink color idlis. (Grinde strawberry with wayer to make paste) Add spinach paste to last cup of batter to get green color idlis( Grinde spinach with water to paste it)
  6. Put colored batter in idli stand plates, make required designs and steam in cooker for 10minutes. Serve with sambar and coconut chutney.
