Ingredients Serving: 10

  1. 1 cup skinned split pigeon pea
  2. 1 small piece of white pumpkin
  3. 1 small piece yellow pumpkin
  4. 5-6 peices of drumstick
  5. 1 medium sized tomato
  6. 1 small lemon sized ball of tamarind
  7. For sambaar masala
  8. 1/2 cup shredded coconut
  9. 1/2 tsp chili powder
  10. 1/2 tsp coriander powder
  11. 1/4 tsp turmeric powder
  12. Salt to taste
  13. few curry leaves
  14. 1/4 Tsp Asafoetida
  15. For tempering
  16. 1 tbsp Coconut oil
  17. 1/2 tsp mustard seeds
  18. few curry leaves
  19. few chopped coriander leaves

Instructions

  1. Boil dal along with tomatoes till soft and mushy.
  2. Separately boil vegetables till done.
  3. Now let's make masala for sambaar.
  4. In a pan heat oil and fry coconut till light golden brown.
  5. Once brown add all the spice powders and salt ,saute till the mixture slightly leaves oil.
  6. Switch off the gas and let the mixture cool completely
  7. Grind this mixture into a fine paste.
  8. Mix the pigeon pea and cooked vegetable together and add in the tamarind extract and let the mixture come to a boil.
  9. Once it's boiled add the ground sambaar masala and let it further boil it for few more minutes.
  10. Now heat oil in a pan and add mustard seeds and curry leaves.
  11. Let it crackle and add it to sambaar.
  12. Serve hot with steamed rice.
