Crabs cooked in a spicy coconut gravy.

Ingredients Serving: 6

  1. Large crabs (cleaned and halved) 6
  2. Fresh grated coconut 1 cup
  3. Dried dessicated coconut 1 cup
  4. Dried Kashmiri chillies 8
  5. Tamarind pulp 2 tbsps
  6. Whole coriander seeds 1 tbsp
  7. Whole cumin seeds 1 tsp
  8. Poppy seeds 1 tsp
  9. Cloves 3-4
  10. Pepper 1/4 tsp
  11. Cinammon stick 1 inch
  12. Turmeric powder 1 tsp
  13. Onions 3
  14. Garlic cloves 2-3
  15. Oil 1 spoon
  16. Ghee 1 spoon
  17. Salt to taste

Instructions

  1. 01. Wash the crabs well and salt them.
  2. 02. Set aside two onions, oil, ghee, salt and crabs.
  3. 03. Dry roast each of the other ingredients (except the tamarind pulp, which is added straight into the grinder) and grind into a smooth paste.
  4. 04. Chop one onion, heat oil in a pan and saute the onion till golden brown. Add the ground masala and roast until oil oozes out.
  5. 05. Wash the crabs again and add to the pan. Mix well until the masala coats the crabs evenly. Add salt and a little water, about a cup, so the consistency is still thick.
  6. 06. Cover the pan and let cook for about 5 minutes.
  7. 07. In a separate pan, heat the ghee and fry the third onion until well browned. Pour this over the gravy and take off heat.
  8. 07. Serve with freshly made steamed rice and a green salad.
