ABOUT Urad dal ladoo RECIPE

This aromatic preparation is a reminiscence of my childhood , I can still hear my mom hum some Carnatic numbers as she proceeds through the process.

Ingredients Serving: 8

  1. Half cup urad dal/skinned black gram/uzhuthamparripu
  2. Half cup sugar/brown sugar
  3. One third cup ghee
  4. Onetbsp crushed badam
  5. One tsp raisins
  6. Cardamom optional(I have not added as I like the aroma of the black gram

Instructions

  1. Using a clean damp kitchen cloth rub the skinned urad so as to remove the dust on it.
  2. In a heavy bottomed pan add the urad dal and set on a low flame to dry roast. Keep stirring through this time taking process. For about ten to fifteen minutes till the dal turns golden.
  3. Remove and cool the dal to ha temperature you can handle
  4. Into the fine mill, add the dal, sugar and cardamom (optional) and grind to a smooth powder
  5. In a small pan add two tbsp of the ghee and roast the crushed badam till golden. Drain and keep aside.
  6. Now into the same pan add raisins. And roast till they puff. Remove from heat and set aside
  7. Into the original larger pan add the remaining ghee and the powder prepared. Roast again well on a low flame.
  8. Toss in the roasted badam and raisin mix well
  9. Prepare ball shaped ladoos by pressing the mixture together.. if too dry add in a tsp of ghee.
  10. The laddoo will be soft initially and then will set well once the ghee solidifies
  11. Enjoy happy sweet Diwali

can we use white urad dal( without skin)?
