ABOUT Upma RECIPE

An evergreen South Indian breakfast special. Nutritious and very easy to make, it is an all time hit with my family.

Ingredients Serving: 4

  1. Semolina/ Suji 2 cups
  2. Garlic finely chopped, 2 cloves
  3. Turmeric a pinch (optional)
  4. Curry leaves, a handful
  5. Black mustard seeds 1 tsp
  6. Salt to taste
  7. Green chillies 3-4, finely chopped
  8. Oil 2 tbsp
  9. Peanuts- a handful
  10. Onion 1 medium sized, finely chopped
  11. Coriander leaves- a handful, finely chopped

Instructions

  1. Heat the oil and add in the mustard seeds. Then add in the curry leaves, garlic and onion. Saute for about 2 mins on a medium flame.
  2. Next add in the peanuts and green chillies. Let the peanuts cook till the raw aroma goes away.
  3. In about 10 mins time, add the semolina and roast for 2 mins by stirring it in between. Add hot water about 2 cups to it and mix well.
  4. Cover and simmer for the next 5 mins.
  5. Garnish with coriander and serve it hot with any chutney, pickle or just as it is.
