ABOUT Kalachana rice RECIPE

This dish is a simple and easy to cook dish which packs alot of flavours and is instant to cook.

Ingredients Serving: 2

  1. 200 grams Basmati rice
  2. 100 grams Kala Channa
  3. 1 Onion finely chopped
  4. 1/2 teaspoon Coriander powder
  5. 1 teaspoon Chana Masala powder
  6. 1 teaspoon Ginger-garlic paste
  7. Handful of coriander leaves finally chopped (optional)
  8. 1 tablespoon ghee
  9. 500 ml Water
  10. Salt to taste
  11. Tempering Ingredients:
  12. 2 Cloves
  13. 1 Star Anise
  14. 1 Cardamom
  15. 2 Cinnamon sticks (1/2 inch piece)
  16. 1 teaspoon ghee
  17. 2 teaspoon oil


  1. Wash and soak the channa for a minimum of 8 hours or overnight. Also wash and soak the rice for atleast 30 minutes before cooking.
  2. Put the chana into a pressure cooker with water and salt. Let it cook on a low heat until 5-6 whistle blows.
  3. To temper, take a pan, heat the ghee and oil together. Once they are hot, put in all the tempering ingredients.
  4. Next, add the ginger garlic paste along with the onions. Saute and cook till the onions turn golden brown in colour. Add in the coriander and channa masala powder and stir well.
  5. Then put in the boiled channa give and cook for 2-3 minutes while stirring in between.
  6. Finally add in the basmati rice along with 500 ml water, adjust the salt according to taste. Cover with lid and let it be till the rice is cooked.
  7. After the rice is cooked, pour in the ghee and garnish with the finely chopped coriander leaves .
  8. Serve warm with a side of homemade chutney or raita.
