This recipe, made from french beans with grated coconut is a favourite and highly popular amongst Tamils.

Beans Poriyal

Ingredients to make Beans Poriyal

  • 200 grams french beans cut in halves
  • 2 teaspoon urad dal
  • 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 1 teaspoon mustard seeds
  • 1/4 teaspoon asafoetida (hing)
  • 1 onion finely chopped
  • 5-6 curry leaves
  • 25 grams coconut freshly grated
  • 1 tablespoon oil
  • salt to taste

How to make Beans Poriyal

  1. Heat oil in a kadhai/ pan. Once the oil is hot, put in the mustard and cumin seeds.
  2. Once they crackle put in the asafoetida, curry leaves, dal and give it a good stir.
  3. Sauté and cook this on a medium heat for a minute or so.
  4. Then put in the beans and stir fry for 1-2 minutes.
  5. Next, pour in half a cup of water along with salt and let it cook for 8-10 minutes on medium heat.
  6. Once the water dries up, add in the grated coconut and cook for another 1-2 minutes.
  7. Serve hot alongside rice or chapatis as desired.
