ABOUT Moong Dal Chilla (Yellow Lentils Indian Style Pancake) RECIPE

A protein packed Indian style lentil pancake usually served for breakfast. Traditionally, it's made with chickpea flour (Besan), but for healthier version it can be substituted with yellow lentils (moong dal). It's spiced up to enhance flavors.

Ingredients Serving: 2

  1. 1 cup yellow moong dal flour (yellow lentils)
  2. 1/4 cup chickpea flour (Besan)
  3. 1/4 cup rice flour
  4. 1/2 tsp carom seeds (ajwain/owa)
  5. 1/2 Onion finely chopped
  6. 3 green chilies finely chopped
  7. 1/4 tsp asafoedita (hing)
  8. 1/2 tsp turmeric powder
  9. 1 tsp red chili powder
  10. 3 tbsp finely chopped coriander leaves
  11. Salt to taste
  12. Water as per requirement
  13. Olive oil as needed

Instructions

  1. Sift besan for smoother blend and to avoid lumpy batter. Combine the flours along with the rest of the ingredients except water. Whisk well.
  2. Add enough water to make semi thin batter (pouring consistency). Set aside for 5 minutes.
  3. Heat teaspoon oil in nonstick pan on medium hot flame.
  4. Pour a ladle full of batter and spread it out evenly.
  5. Cook till the underside becomes golden in color.
  6. Add another teaspoon of oil over the pancake and flip it to cook the other side.
  7. Press down with spatula to cook the pancake evenly.
  8. Remove to a plate and serve with ketchup, mayonnaise, or chutney.
