ABOUT Apple Pie Calzone RECIPE

Inspired by the Better Butter Pizza making Masterclass I have tried to get the classic apple pie filling into a calzone. Unlike a short crust pastry pie this is healthier with less calories.

Ingredients Serving: 4

  1. Refined flour (Maida) - 250g
  2. Sugar - 10g
  3. Dry yeast - 5g
  4. Salt - 5g
  5. Refined oil / Olive oil - 12.5ml
  6. Water - 150ml
  7. Apple - 1
  8. Sugar powder - 30g
  9. Cinnamon powder - 1/2 tsp
  10. Digestive biscuits - 2-3
  11. Raisins - 2 tbsp

Instructions

  1. Take sugar and dry yeast in a bowl and add a little lukewarm water. Leave it aside for a couple of minutes for the yeast to get active.
  2. Sieve the flour, add salt and make a well in the center.
  3. Pour the yeast - sugar mixture in the well and gradually mix with the flour while adding water little by little.
  4. Knead to a soft dough and work the dough on the kitchen platform for about 10 mins by pressing the dough with the heel of your palm. This helps to release the gluten in the flour and makes the dough soft.
  5. Add the oil and knead till all of it is absorbed into the dough.
  6. Cover the dough and leave it in a warm place to rise for about 3 hours.
  7. While the dough is resting peel and core the apple and dice it.
  8. Break the digestive biscuits roughly and mix it with the diced apple.
  9. To this add sugar powder, cinnamon powder and raisins.
  10. Pre-heat the oven to about 220 C.
  11. Take the dough out and it would have risen by now. Just punch it a couple of times to release carbon dioxide. Divide it into 8 equal portions.
  12. Roll them out into circles.
  13. Place about 1 tbsp of the apple pie filling in the lower half of the circle and cover it by folding the upper half to form a semi-circular calzone.
  14. Seal the edge with a little water and press down with a fork.
  15. Arrange them on a baking tray and bake for 20 mins at 220 C.
  16. Serve warm with a sprinkling of sugar powder.
