ABOUT Spinach Horsegram Pithale RECIPE

Pithale is a popular Maharashtrian recipe prepared using besan flour, which is traditional eaten with bhakri. I have used the same recipe and made it more healthy by replacing besan with horse gram powder. Horse gram has lots of nutritious benefits and importantly, it helps to reduce weight.

Ingredients Serving: 2

  1. 1 big Onion, finely sliced
  2. 1 tomato, finely chopped
  3. 2 Green Chillies, chopped
  4. 1/4 tsp turmeric powder
  5. 1 cup spinach, finely chopped
  6. 1/2 Cup Horse gram powder
  7. 2 1/2 Cups Water + 3/4 Cup Water
  8. 2 Tsp Olive oil ( any cooking oil )
  9. 1/2 tsp mustard seeds
  10. 1 Tsp Cumin / Jeera seeds
  11. a pinch of Hing
  12. Salt to taste
  13. Coriander leaves for garnishing
  14. 1/4 tsp lemon juice

Instructions

  1. Heat oil in a pan and add mustard seeds.
  2. Once it starts spluttering, add jeera followed by hing.
  3. Add the sliced onions and saute till it turns translucent.
  4. Add green chillies followed by chopped tomato and spinach.
  5. Saute till the tomato turns mushy.
  6. Now add turmeric powder followed by salt and 2 1/2 cups of water.
  7. Simmer the flame and let it boil.
  8. Meanwhile, mix horse gram in 3/4 cup of water without any lumps.
  9. Add the horse gram water to the boiling water and stir continuously in a low flame till the mixture thickens.
  10. Once it gets thickened, remove from the flame.
  11. Add lemon juice and garnish with coriander leaves.
  12. Serve hot.
