Idli Seeyali is a spicy and delicious recipe that is great to use up leftover idlis. It is great to serve for breakfast or snack. Recipe is from Mallika Badrinath's 100 Tiffin Varieties cookbook.

Ingredients Serving: 2

  1. 10 Idlis, cut into 1
  2. 1 Large Onion, thinly sliced
  3. 2 tsp Thick tamarind paste
  4. 1 tsp sambar powder
  5. 1 tsp sambar powder
  6. To taste salt
  7. 2 tbsp Cilantro, finely chopped
  8. 1 tsp chana dal
  9. 1 tsp urad dal
  10. 1 tsp mustard seeds
  11. 1 tsp cumin seeds
  12. 1~2 Dry Red chilies
  13. 8~10 curry leaves


  1. Heat 1tbsp oil in a large saute pan. Add the tempering ingredients and when the seeds start to splutter, add the onions and cook till they start to get brown around the edges.
  2. Next add the tamarind paste, turmeric, sambar powder, jaggery/ sugar and salt. Mix well. Add a splash of water if the mixture looks too dry. Cook for 1~2 minutes.
  3. Stir in the chopped idlis and cook for 2~3 minutes. Turn off the heat and sprinkle the chopped cilantro. Serve right away.
