ABOUT Moong Dal Ka Halwa RECIPE

It's a Rich and Popular recipe from recipe from North India. This recipe is usually made on festive occasions or in marriages and in winters too. I have made this halwa from Ruchi Mehta's cookbook of Punjabi Khana.

Ingredients Serving: 6

  1. Moong dal 1 cup
  2. Ghee 1 cup
  3. Besan 2 teaspoon
  4. Khoya 34 cup
  5. Cardamom 5
  6. Water 2 12 cup
  7. Strings of Kesar 20
  8. Almonds (sliced) 20
  9. Pista (sliced) 20

Instructions

  1. Wash & soak dal in water for 3 hours.
  2. Drain & grind it to a fine paste after 3 hours.
  3. Powder cardamoms & keep aside.
  4. Put sugar & water along with cardamom powder & kesar strings into a pan over a medium heat till sugar dissolves. Simmer for 2-3 minutes on low heat. Remove from fire & keep aside.
  5. Melt ghee in a heavy bottomed pan & fry besan till light brown.
  6. Remove from heat & add dal paste. ( This will prevent dal from sticking to the bottom of the pan.)
  7. Put it again on the medium heat & cook. Keep stirring for 25-30 minutes till golden brown.
  8. Grate khoya & add to the mixture. Stir for more 8-10 minutes.
  9. When done ghee will start separating.
  10. Add sliced almonds & pistachios. Keep aside 1 tablespoon of nuts for garnishing.
  11. Add sugar syrup to the mixture & continue to cook till it absorbs water. Keep stirring another 5 minutes.
  12. Sprinkle 2 tbsp ghee & keep stirring again on very low heat for 5 minutes.
  13. Garnish with sliced almonds & pistachio. serve hot.
