A Travancore style fish curry made in my style

Ingredients Serving: 10

  1. Onion 3 big sliced fine
  2. Sear fish cut into cubes 1 kg
  3. Garlic 10-12 cloves
  4. Ginger 2-3 inch piece
  5. Green chilly 2-3 sliced
  6. Curry leaves as reqd
  7. Shallots 10-12 finely chopped
  8. Salt as reqd
  9. Turmeric powder 1 tsp
  10. Red chilli powder 3 tbsp or as reqd
  11. Coriander powder 3 tbsp or as reqd
  12. Kudam Puli 3-4
  13. Tomatoes 3 big ones
  14. Mustard seeds 1 tsp
  15. Fenugreek seeds 1/8 tsp or a pinch
  16. Refined Oil 2 Tbsp
  17. Coconut oil 1 tbsp
  18. Coconut milk from 1 coconut or 1.5 cups thick milk

Instructions

  1. Marinate the fish pieces with some turmeric powder and keep aside for half an hour.
  2. Saute the onions in refined oil till translucent.
  3. Add roughly chopped ginger, garlic and tomatoes and saute for a while.
  4. Switch off the gas and grind it finely when cooled.
  5. In a meen chatti ( earthern vessel ), add some refined oil and add the mustard seeds.
  6. When it splutters, add fenugreek seeds, curry leaves, chopped shallots and sliced green chillies.
  7. When it's nicely sauteed, add the ground masala and cook well.
  8. Add turmeric, chilli and coriander powder and cook till the raw smell of the masala goes off.
  9. Pour 2 cups water, add salt and the kudam Puli and bring it to a boil.
  10. Add the marinated fish pieces and cook on medium flame for 10-15 minutes or till the fish gets cooked.
  11. Extract milk from the scraped coconut and add it to the fish curry. ( You may use ready made coconut milk ) .
  12. Let it boil well. Adjust the salt. Garnish with fresh sprigs of curry leaves and a tbsp of fresh coconut oil.
  13. Keep it for few hrs before serving. The more u keep, the better the flavours will be.
  14. Enjoy with plain white rice or Kerala red rice :)
  15. You can adjust the spices as per ur taste buds.
