Chayote is originally native to Mesoamerica. In India this vegetable is found mainly in Tamilnadu and Bangalore.It is one veggie less in calories and also rich in vitamin. Podimas means powder.

Ingredients Serving: 2

  1. Chayote Squash(Chow Chow):- 2nos
  2. Onion:- 1 Chopped finely
  3. turmeric:- 1tsp
  4. Chilly powdered:- 1tsp
  5. Salt
  6. For Roasting
  7. Udral dal:- 1 tsp
  8. Chana dal:- 1tbsp
  9. Cummin Seeds:- 1 tsp
  10. Dry Red Chillies:- 3-4 nos
  11. Curry leaves:- a sprig
  12. Coconut grated:- 2tbsp
  13. tamarind:- a seeds size piece
  14. Methi seeds:- 1/2 tsp
  15. oil

Instructions

  1. Heat pan and roast all ingredients listed under roasting except oil
  2. Roast until it turns nice brown in color,allow it to cool and grind coarsely without adding water.
  3. Take small pot add chayote pieces along with salt,turmeric,chilly powder and water.
  4. Boil chayote until it is half cooked( do not allow chayote it become very soft)
  5. Now heat oil in a pan add mustard seeds allow it to splutter, add onion and fry until it turns pink,add half cooked chayote and fry for 5 minutes
  6. Add powdered masala and salt if required.
  7. Mix well until all powdered masala incorporated with chayote, cook for 5 mins in medium flame stirring slowly.
  8. Serve hot with rice and rasam
