ABOUT Chital Maacher Jhol/Clown Knife Fish Gravy RECIPE

The king of all fishes, the mighty Chital, is known as the Clown Knife fish in English. I find that this translation somehow robs the fish of it's glory.

Ingredients Serving: 4

  1. 4 chital maacher peti
  2. 1 tbsp turmeric
  3. 1 tbsp salt
  4. tsp jeera
  5. 1 large tomato chopped
  6. 2 potatoes cubed
  7. 1 tbsp ginger paste
  8. 1 tbsp coriander powder
  9. 1 tsp cumin powder
  10. 1 tsp garam masala
  11. 1 tsp turmeric powder
  12. 1 tsp red chilli powder
  13. Salt to taste
  14. cup mustard oil

Instructions

  1. Apply salt and turmeric to the fish and marinate it for half an hour. Then heat the mustard oil to a smoking point, reduce the flame and fry the fish pieces. Keep aside.
  2. In the same oil, add in the jeera. Then the cubed potatoes and fry well. Put in half the ginger paste and chopped tomato. Cover and cook till the tomato becomes soft.
  3. Add in the cumin powder, coriander powder, garam masala powder, salt, turmeric powder and red chilli powder. Stir well and fry till the oil separates.
  4. Add 1 cup of water and bring it to a boil. Now add the fried fish pieces, cover and cook for 10 minutes. .
  5. Put in the rest of the ginger paste, let this simmer for a minute and switch off the heat.
  6. Garnish with ginger juliennes and fresh coriander leaves. Serve hot alongside rice for best taste.
