Nasi Goreng is considered the national dish of Indonesia. It is a fried rice dish, traditionally prepared with prawns, eggs, chicken, tamarind, chilli, etc, however I have made use of readily available local ingredients and Indianized this dish.

Ingredients Serving: 4

  1. For the spice paste:
  2. 4 peppercorns
  3. tsp nutmeg powder
  4. 3 tbsp roasted cashewnuts
  5. tsp sesame seeds
  6. 1 onion chopped
  7. 1 ginger chopped
  8. 1 tsp turmeric powder
  9. 5 garlic chopped
  10. 2 green chilli chopped
  11. 11/2 tsp sugar
  12. 1 1/2 tbsp oil
  13. 1/4 cup lime juice
  14. salt to taste
  15. For the Indonesian fried rice:
  16. 2 cups rice
  17. 3 onions sliced
  18. 100 grams green beans
  19. 3 carrots sliced fine
  20. 1 large brocoli chopped
  21. 1 bunch spinach chopped fine
  22. 4 garlic pods chopped
  23. 1 tbsp tomato puree
  24. 200 grams boneless chicken sliced
  25. 1 tbsp soya sauce


  1. Make the spice paste with the listed ingredients. Grind all the ingredients to form a smooth paste.
  2. Wash and boil the rice in a bowl or pan.
  3. Heat some oil, then deep fry 1/4 of the sliced onions till they turn brown. Saute the chicken, green beans, carrots, broccoli and spinach. Once this is cooked, keep it aside.
  4. Pour some more oil. Saute the remaining onions and garlic. Add in rest of the vegetables and stir well.
  5. Next put in the spice paste along with the tomato puree. Fry this for a minute or two.
  6. Add in the boiled rice. Also put in the kept aside chicken and veggies, soya sauce and salt to taste. Fry for some time on a low flame.
  7. Garnish with the browned onions and some roasted peanuts. Serve hot for best taste.
