About Whole Wheat Pizza Recipe

Getting the Pizza right at home is a challenge. My mother loves pizzas with a wheat flour base and a thin crust at that. I thought I would bite the bullet and try it out this weekend! Above all, I followed the Tawa style of cooking, so no oven used here, unless you want to.

Whole Wheat Pizza

Ingredients to make Whole Wheat Pizza

  • Whole wheat flour - 2 cups (or add 1 cup maida + 1 cup atta)
  • tomato puree - 1 and 1/2 cup
  • Chopped capsicum and Sliced Onions - 1 cup each
  • paneer cubes - 1/2 cup
  • olive oil - 2 tbsp
  • Instant Dry yeast - 2 tsp (*See notes)
  • curd - 1 tbsp
  • garlic powder - 1 tsp
  • sugar - 1 tsp
  • Chili flakes - 1 tsp
  • Dried herbs such as oregano as per choice
  • Grated Mozzarella cheese + any other extra cheese
  • salt to taste

How to make Whole Wheat Pizza

  1. Soak yeast in a bowl with luke warm water, sugar and 1 tsp salt. Stir and leave aside for 10 mins till it is frothy.
  2. Sift together the flour and salt in a bowl. Make a well in the centre, add in the yeast mixture. Then add 1 tbsp curd and knead into a soft dough. Cover with a damp cloth and leave for 1 hour.
  3. Place the dough on a floured surface, roll into a cylinder and divide into 6 equal portions. Roll the portions out into pizza bases, prick all over with a fork.
  4. Heat a tawa on medium heat. Place the base, cover with a lid and cook on 1 side only for 5 mins. Remove and keep aside. Repeat with other bases as well.
  5. Heat olive oil in a pan,add the tomato puree. Let it simmer on a medium flame for about 5 mins. Add garlic powder, chilli flakes, salt, other dry masalas if desired and the dried herbs, stir for 1 minute and remove.
  6. Spread 1 tbsp sauce on the cooked side of the pizza. Arrange the rest of the toppings and sprinkle grated cheese.
  7. Place the prepared pizza base back on the tawa so that the uncooked side is directly on the pan now. Cover and cook on a low heat for about 7-8 mins till cheese starts bubbling and turns golden brown.
  8. Serve it warm for best taste.

My Tip:

You can use 1 tsp baking powder instead of yeast and a required amount of curd to knead the dough. You can also use any dry masala of your choice to give it an Indian touch!
