How to make Vazhakkai Podi (Raw Banana Powder)

  1. In a wide pan take a 3/4 cup water. Cut the raw banana into halves, removing the edges
  2. Put the raw banana in pan allow it to boil well. When it starts to boil add turmeric powder and salt. Close it with a lid. Let it boil till it becomes mushy. Then turn off the flame and remove the skin. Keep it aside.
  3. In a pan add oil. When it is hot add red chillies and fry till it become crisp in a medium flame.
  4. Then add channa dal and roast it till it becomes brown in a low flame.
  5. Next add toor dal and allow it to get roasted.
  6. At last add dhaniya and allow it to get roasted. All should be roasted in a low flame. Else, they may get burnt
  7. Switch off the flame and make a fine powder of the roasted daals
  8. In the same pan add ghee and temper with mustard seeds, urad dal.
  9. Then add curry leaves and allow it become crisp. Before switching off the flame add asafoetida and raost for few seconds and turn off the flame.
  10. Pour this mixture to the raw banana and mash well together with a masher. Then add the powder, salt to this mixture and mash well again till it becomes like a semi solid, powder consistency. Allow it to cool.
  11. After half an hour, you can find the mashed mixture would be in a powder consistency. There will be some lumps too and that is normal.
  12. Serve it with a hot rice with a teaspoon of ghee. You can use this powder for stuffing brinjal.

My Tip:

If you do not like the strong taste of curry leaves, you can crush it in your hand and then can add it with the raw banana.
