ABOUT Vazhakkai Podi (Raw Banana Powder) RECIPE

Vazhakkai Podi is a fantastic dish prepared with Raw Banana, dals and spices. Usually we use raw banana in preparing curries, bajji etc. This is quite a different version with this exotic veggie. Mix it with rice with a little ghee and have it with pappad.

Ingredients Serving: 4

  1. Raw Banana (big) - 1
  2. Red Chillies - 7 to 8
  3. Channa Dal - 3 Teaspoon
  4. Toor Dal - 1 1/4 Teaspoon
  5. Dhaniya/ Coriander Seeds - 3 Teaspoon
  6. Asafoetida - 1 1/2 Teaspoon
  7. Mustard seeds - 1 teaspoon
  8. Urad Dal - 1 teaspoon
  9. Curry leaves - handful
  10. Turmeric powder - 1 teaspoon
  11. Salt - as per taste
  12. Gingelly Oil - 2 1/2 teaspoon
  13. Ghee - 3 teaspoon

Instructions

  1. In a wide pan take a 3/4 cup water. Cut the raw banana into halves, removing the edges
  2. Put the raw banana in pan allow it to boil well. When it starts to boil add turmeric powder and salt. Close it with a lid. Let it boil till it becomes mushy. Then turn off the flame and remove the skin. Keep it aside.
  3. In a pan add oil. When it is hot add red chillies and fry till it become crisp in a medium flame.
  4. Then add channa dal and roast it till it becomes brown in a low flame.
  5. Next add toor dal and allow it to get roasted.
  6. At last add dhaniya and allow it to get roasted. All should be roasted in a low flame. Else, they may get burnt
  7. Switch off the flame and make a fine powder of the roasted daals
  8. In the same pan add ghee and temper with mustard seeds, urad dal.
  9. Then add curry leaves and allow it become crisp. Before switching off the flame add asafoetida and raost for few seconds and turn off the flame.
  10. Pour this mixture to the raw banana and mash well together with a masher. Then add the powder, salt to this mixture and mash well again till it becomes like a semi solid, powder consistency. Allow it to cool.
  11. After half an hour, you can find the mashed mixture would be in a powder consistency. There will be some lumps too and that is normal.
  12. Serve it with a hot rice with a teaspoon of ghee. You can use this powder for stuffing brinjal.
