Morkali is a traditional dish from Tamilnadu made from rice flour and buttermilk. To make it more healthier I had replaced rice flour with oats flour. Replacing rice flour with oats does not compromise in taste and its absolutely heavenly if taken along with more Molagai (Curd Chili's)

Oats Morkali

Ingredients to make Oats Morkali

  • Oats – 1 cup
  • salt – to taste
  • yogurt – ¼ cup
  • water – 2 cups
  • hing – A generous pinch
  • curry leaves – few
  • coriander leaves - few
  • oil – 1.5 tsp
  • mustard – ½ tsp
  • Channa Dhal (Bengal Gram Dhal) – 1 tsp
  • Mor Mulaga (curd Chili's)– 2 Nos

How to make Oats Morkali

  1. To begin making Oats Morkali, grind oats into a fine powder
  2. Sieve Oats into a fine powder.
  3. Add salt, curry leaves, hing powder, yogurt and water and whisk well to make a watery batter without lumps.
  4. Set aside for 3 hours.
  5. After 3 hours, take out the oats-buttermilk and whisk well again. Add finely coriander leaves.
  6. Start the tempering. Take a non-stick pan and add oil, mustard, channa dal (Bengal Gram Dhal),Tear 2 mor molaga’s and fry well. Mor Molaga would take long time to fry hence make sure to put them before channa dal is fried.
  7. Add oats-buttermilk mix and keep stirring until it turns out to be thick ( like a halwa consistency).
  8. Serve warm or hot.

My Tip:

You may soak the oats buttermilk mix overnight if you want to cook for early morning breakfast. Make sure to add slightly less salt while soaking the oats buttermilk mix.
