ABOUT Thai Minced Chicken With Fresh Basil RECIPE

I was in a small town called Chiang Mai in Northern Thailand a few years back and that is when I truly began to enjoy Thai food. While in Chiang Mai, I was exposed to the sheer magic of Thai cuisine and that the secret ingredient to each dish is balance. Balance of the sweet, sour, spicy and salty flavours come together to form this culinary harmony. Apart from the usual red/green curry, papaya salad and tom yum soup I was determined to learn more about the cuisine and one night at around 2am in a tiny café I found my most favorite Thai dish and it was the mince pork stir fried with fresh holy basil. It was an explosion of flavor in my mouth which perfectly represented what Thai food was all about. And with great joy I would like to share that recipe with you guys.

Ingredients Serving: 2

  1. 200 gms fresh mince chicken (Vegetarians: Use mince tofu)
  2. 1 tbsp chopped garlic
  3. 1/2 tbsp chopped fresh red chilli (adjust acc. to liking)
  4. 1-2 tbsp Fish Sauce (Vegetarians: Use regular soy sauce)
  5. 1-2 tbsp Oyster sauce(Vegetarians: vegetarian oyster flavor)
  6. 1 tsp sugar
  7. 3-4 tbsp fresh holy basil roughly chopped
  8. 3-4 tbsp finely chopped green long beans/ regular green bean
  9. 2 tbsp finely chopped onion
  10. 2 tbsp oil

Instructions

  1. Heat oil in a deep pan, add chopped red chilli and garlic and stir in hot oil for a 15-20 seconds , just to flavor the hot oil. Add the mince chicken and stir until cooked. Chicken will start looking white in color and will release water.
  2. Add onions + beans and stir continuously. At this stage you can cover the pan so that the beans cook with some steam. Cover it for a min and then taste the bean to see if it is soft enough to chew but crunchy enough to enjoy the texture.
  3. Add fish sauce, oyster sauce and sugar. Stir and taste for flavor. Since fish sauce is the main source of salt in Thai food so I suggest you start with only adding a little bit of the mentioned amount first to check if the flavor is okay.
  4. Check the flavor balance one last time and turn off the flame. Add the roughly chopped fresh basil leaves and stir it into the mince chicken and serve with a bowl of brown rice and an egg. The egg is a classic Thai street touch.
