ABOUT Healthy Barnyard Millet Pongal RECIPE

Pongal is a popular dish in South Indian homes and is typically served as a special breakfast in Tamil Nadu. And this Barnyard Millet, is a nutritional twist to the Pongal variety and extremely delicious! It has 6 times high fiber content when compared with wheat. Black gram added along with it, helps in strengthening of bones and muscles.

Ingredients Serving: 2

  1. Barnyard Millet - 100 gms
  2. Broken black gram - 100 gms
  3. Mustard seeds - 1 tsp
  4. Whole black gram - 1 tsp
  5. Sesame oil - 1 tsp
  6. Pepper corns - 1 tsp
  7. Split Chickpea - 1 tsp
  8. Curry leaves - a few
  9. Cashewnuts - a few
  10. Asafoetida - a pinch
  11. Salt - to taste

Instructions

  1. Soak the black gram in water for 1/2 hour. Wash, drain and keep it aside.
  2. Wash the barnyard millet in water for two to three times.
  3. In a pressure cooker, add soaked black gram and add 200 gm of water to it.
  4. When the grams are half cooked for 2 whistles, open the lid and add the millets.
  5. Add required amount of salt and cook on a medium flame, with lid open.
  6. Fry mustard seeds, curry leaves, chick peas, pepper corns, asafoetida powder and add this mixture to the pongal.
  7. Add cashew nuts / ghee for a richer flavor.
  8. Serve hot with Sambar/Chutney.
