ABOUT Baked Chana Dal Flan or Kadalaparippu Pola RECIPE

Flans are loved by almost all. Here is my version of flan made entirely out of the least expected ingredient for a flan – chana dal. However, this dish is popular among the malabar regions of Kerala during Ifthars. It is very easy to make it and yet truly delicious. Do try out this interesting recipe and enjoy.

Ingredients Serving: 6

  1. Chana dal 1 cup
  2. Eggs 6
  3. Grated jaggery 1 cup
  4. Crushed cardamom 2
  5. Salt a pinch
  6. Water as required to cook the dal
  7. Dry fruits for garnishing (I have used almonds and raisins)

Instructions

  1. Cook chana dal in water with little salt. I did not pressure cook, but in a closed pan.
  2. Once cooked, drain water and grind into a fine paste.
  3. Now mix together this dal paste, eggs, jaggery and cardamom with a pinch of salt in the big jar of mixer grinder.
  4. Preheat the oven to 180 degree centigrade.
  5. Line a loaf tin with parchment paper. Grease it well.
  6. Pour in the batter (it would be watery, as compared to cake batter).
  7. Bake for 40 minutes
  8. 15 minutes before the baking completes, throw in the dry fruits.
  9. Do the toothpick test. If a toothpick inserted comes out clean, then it is done.
  10. Allow to cool, and then cut into desired shapes.
