Panchmel Dal

Ingredients to make Panchmel Dal

  • 1 cup mixed lentils (chana, toor, arhar, masoor red, moong yellow and green) in equal quantity
  • ginger 1 inch
  • tomatoes 2
  • coriander powder 1 tsp
  • cumin powder 1 tsp
  • chilli powder 1 tsp
  • Green chilli 2
  • Garam masala powder 1/2 tsp
  • hing 1/4 tsp
  • Fresh coriander leaves chopped 1 tsp
  • oil as per need
  • salt as per taste
  • Whole cumin seeds 1/4 tsp
  • Whole red chilli dry 2
  • turmeric powder 1/4 tsp

How to make Panchmel Dal

  1. Wash and soak lentils for 6 hours or overnight
  2. Now pressure cook with salt for 5 whistles, medium heat
  3. Keep aside, to release the pressure
  4. Chop tomato, coriander leaves and green chilli
  5. Heat 2 tsp oil or ghee
  6. Add cumin seeds, let them crackle
  7. Add dry red chilli
  8. Saute for 2_3 mins
  9. Add cumin and coriander powder
  10. Add garam masala, turmeric powder and asafoetida too
  11. Again saute for 2_3 mins
  12. Now add tomato pieces and salt
  13. Add cooked dal
  14. Mix well
  15. Cook for 10 mins in medium heat
  16. Simmer for 5 mins more in low heat
  17. Switch off gas
  18. Garnish with coriander leaves
  19. Server hot with rice or roti
