Yellow lentil or split green-gram or mug dal is a regular lunch item for Bengalis.This lentil is used to make plain dal, veg dal, khichuri etc..But this scrumptious dal is a celebratory lentil dish which made with fish head.In any wedding party or special occasion, this is definitely served with steam rice.

Ingredients Serving: 5

  1. Katla/ ruhu/vetki fish head - cut into 4 pieces
  2. Yellow mung dal /split green gram- 200 gm or 2 cups
  3. Onion - 1 sliced
  4. Ginger +green chili paste - 1tsp
  5. Salt as required
  6. Sugar - 1-2 tsp
  7. Turmeric powder- 2 tsp
  8. Chili - 1/2 tsp
  9. Cumin Powder- 1tsp
  10. Coriander powder- 1tsp
  11. Garam Masala Powder- 1tsp
  12. Cumin seeds- 1/2 tsp
  13. Dry red chili- 2
  14. Green cardamom- 2
  15. Cinnamon- 1/2 inch stick
  16. Cloves- 3-4
  17. Bay leaves- 2
  18. Ghee - 1tbsp
  19. Coconut- 1 tbsp, chopped

Instructions

  1. Wash fish head properly, marinate with 1/2tsp turmeric and 1/2 Tsp salt for 10 mins.
  2. Heat pan with 2 tbsp mustard oil .add the fish head and fry both sides till light brown. Take it out and keep aside.
  3. Now dry roast mung dal till you get a nice aroma.
  4. Cook mung dal in pressure cooker with little salt, turmeric and 1/2 cup of water for 2-3 whistle.
  5. Now heat a pan with 1 1/2 tbsp mustard oil, add bay leaves, whole spices, dry red chilli and 1/2 Tsp cumin seeds
  6. Once you get a nice aroma, add chopped coconut .fry it for a minute. Then add sliced onion .fry till light brown then add ginger and green chilli paste, stir it for a minute.
  7. Add turmeric,chili,cumin and coriander powder. Sprinkle some water ..stir well for a minute.
  8. Then add fried fish head, mix well with spices..again sprinkle some water and stir it for 1-2 mins.
  9. Then add boiled dal, give a good stir for dal to mix with fish head and masala.
  10. If the dal is too thick, pour some water to dal consistency.
  11. Once it starts bubbling. Simmer the gas for 3-4 mins.
  12. Add garam masala and 1 tbsp Ghee.. give a nice stir..check seasoning.
  13. Ready macher matha diye bhaja muger dal..serve it with hot rice...
