ABOUT Goan Bean Gravy RECIPE

This is a traditional Goan recipe handed down from generation to generation. Cooked in a thick coconut gravy like most Goan dishes, this recipe was taught to me by my mom who was taught by her mom, my dearest granny.

Ingredients Serving: 6

  1. 1 cup black eyed beans (soaked in water for 4 hours)
  2. 1 & 1/2 cup fresh grated coconut
  3. 3 red chillies
  4. 3 pods garlic
  5. 1/4 teaspoon cumin seeds
  6. 1 tablespoon coriander seeds
  7. 1 teaspoon dry mango powder (amchur)
  8. 1/2 teaspoon Turmeric powder
  9. 2 Medium Onions
  10. Salt to taste
  11. 2 Tablespoons Oil

Instructions

  1. Grind coconut, chillies, garlic, 1 onion, cumin seeds and coriander seeds to a fine paste.
  2. Thinly slice the other onion.
  3. In a pressure cooker, heat oil and fry the sliced onion till light pink.
  4. Add the soaked beans, turmeric powder, dry mango powder, ground paste and salt.
  5. Add 4 cups of water and pressure cook. After 3 whistles, lower the flame and cook for 10-12 minutes.
  6. Serve hot with rice or rotis.

Rajma is different. Black eyed beans are called Chowli or Lobia
