Cholar Dal

Ingredients to make Cholar Dal

  • chana dal 1 cup
  • turmeric powder 1/2 teaspoon
  • Thin coconut slices, each about 1 inch - 10-12 pieces
  • bay leaf 1
  • cloves 3-4
  • cinnamon/dal chi ni piece 1 inch
  • cumin seeds 1/2 - 1 teaspoon
  • Red chillies 2, broken into bits
  • Finely grated ginger 2 teaspoon
  • Pinch of hing
  • salt to taste
  • ghee 2 tablespoon

How to make Cholar Dal

  1. Wash and soak chana dal in water for an hour
  2. Cook the dal soft either in open pan or pressure cooker
  3. Transfer the cooked dal to open pan and add sugar, salt, and turmeric powder
  4. Simmer it till most of the water is absorbed
  5. Meanwhile, heat ghee in a separate pan
  6. Add thin coconut slices and saute them until they are slightly golden brown in color and keep them aside
  7. In the same pan, now add bay leaf, cloves, cinnamon piece, cumin seeds, broken red chilies
  8. Saute them until all the spices turn slightly darker and emit a nice aroma
  9. Now add grated ginger, a pinch of Hing and stir for 30 seconds more and add all this to the cooked dal.
  10. Mix in 1 tbsp of roasted coconut slices too and cover the vessel with a lid
  11. Simmer everything for 3-4 minutes
  12. Adjust the consistency of dal by adding warm water, usually, this dal consistency is thick
  13. Switch of the flame, garnish with remaining fried coconut slices
  14. Cholar Dal is ready to be served hot with rice or chapatis.

My Tip:

Take care that dal should not be overcooked and each grain of dal should be visible.
