ABOUT Millet and Pulse Khichado RECIPE

Millet Khichado is very popular in Gujarat. We add millet and split green gram ( yellow dal). This time I used Rajma and Chole ( chickpeas) with yellow dal.

Ingredients Serving: 4

  1. Millet 2 cups
  2. Rajma, Chickpeas, Split green gram ( mixed 1 cup)
  3. Onion 1
  4. Carrot 1/2 ( chopped and boiled)
  5. Green peas 1/2 cup (boiled)
  6. Garlic chopped 2 tsp
  7. Curry leaves few
  8. Khada masala ( cloves, Cinnamon, cardamom, black paper for seasoning)
  9. Bay leaves 1 to 2
  10. Salt, chilli powder, turmeric to taste.
  11. Coriander powder 2 tsp
  12. Garam masala 1 tsp
  13. Coriander leaves finely chopped 2 tsp
  14. Curd 1 tbsp
  15. Onion for garnishing 1.
  16. Cashew nuts ( fried) few 7 to 8 no. ( for garnishing)
  17. Oil 2 tsp
  18. Ghee ( clarified butter) 1 tbsp

Instructions

  1. Soak pulses for 5 to 6 hours
  2. Soak millet separately for minimum 4 hours.
  3. Pressure cook pulses for 4 to 5 whistles, check if cooked well.
  4. Till the pulses are cooked cook Millet in a broad pan adding double the quantity of water. ( it will take minimum 10 minutes to cook).
  5. Heat oil in a pan, add all Khada masala and let it split. Take out from oil and transfer in a pan in which millet is being cooked.
  6. Now in the same oil fry chopped onions for garnishing. Fry brown and take out.
  7. Now add Jeera in the hot oil, let it split, add chopped garlic and then Onion, saute.
  8. Add all masala, saute and add cooked pulses. Add the Water which is used in pulses too as Millet soaks water.
  9. Now add cooked millet. Add boiled chopped boiled carrots and peas too.
  10. Mix everything well, add ghee and let cook together for 5 to 7 minutes.
  11. Garnish with of coriander leaves and fried cashews.
  12. Serve with carrot tomato soup.
