ABOUT Instant Sambhar Powder / Podi RECIPE

This is a wonderful recipe which comes to rescue when we are short of time or have sudden guests. Normally we need to boil dal for sambhar but this recipe already has dal so just add veggies and water along with this powder to give tasty sambhar in minutes.

Ingredients Serving: 10

  1. Toor daal - 250 gm
  2. Moong daal - 1/2 Cup
  3. Chana daal - 1/2 Cup
  4. Methi Seeds - 1.5 tbsp
  5. Coriander Seeds - 3/4 cup
  6. Jeera / Cumin Seeds - 1 tbsp
  7. Dried Red Chilies - 10
  8. Asafoetida - 1.5 tsp
  9. Curry Leaves - 8 to 10 sprigs
  10. Turmeric - 1.5 tbsp
  11. Kashmiri Chilli Powder - 2 tbsp
  12. Tamarind - Lemon size ball

Instructions

  1. Lightly roast all daals one by one. Just a change in color, don't brown them. Roast all the whole spices one by one and hen roast the tamarind too. Let everything cool under a fan.
  2. Grind everything except tamarind in mixer. When everything is ground into fine powder add tamarind and grind again.
  3. Now sieve this mixture along with the powdered spices. You will get a nice aromatic instant sambhar powder. Cool and store in an airtight container.
  4. When you want to prepare sambhar, just take oil and add mustard seeds, onions, tomatoes, vegetables. Let them cook and then take about 2 tbsp of this masala in small bowl and mix with about 2 tbsp water. Mix properly and add to the cooked vegetables. Pour 2 cups of water and let it boil and your sambhar is ready.Serve with idli, dosa, uttapam or rice.
