ABOUT Gujarati daal RECIPE

The sweet and sour tuvar daal loved by gujjus. Gujrati people say that "daal bagdi to diwas bagadyo".This means if taste of dal is not perfect then their day will be bad. Gujratis are very obsessed with their dal indeed.

Ingredients Serving: 4

  1. Tuvar dal-1/2 cup
  2. Tomatoe-1
  3. oil-1 tbsp
  4. Mustard seeds-1/2 tsp
  5. Methi seeds-1/4 tsp
  6. Cumin Seeds-1 tsp
  7. Curry leaves-10
  8. Red chilli-1
  9. Ginger-1/2 inch
  10. Turmeric powder -1/4 tsp
  11. Red chilli powder-1/2 tsp
  12. Jaggery-2 tbsp
  13. Lemon Juice-1 tbsp
  14. Salt
  15. Coriander leaves (handful)

Instructions

  1. Wash and soak tuvar dal for 1 hour.
  2. Boil the daal with 1 cup of water.
  3. Now blend this dal in a blender.
  4. Heat some oil in a pan. Add mustard seeds and fenugreek seeds.
  5. Now add cumin seeds and asafoetida followed by red chilli, curry leaves and finally chopped tomatoes.
  6. When tomatoes become mushy, add the dal.
  7. Add salt, turmeric, chilli powder, ginger.
  8. Mix and cook for 2 minutes.
  9. Add jaggery and lemon juice.
  10. Boil for 3 to 4 minutes .Adjust the consistency of dal by adding water. This dal should be of medium consistency , not very thick.
  11. Garnish with coriander and serve with rice.
