ABOUT Asian Dal Pasta RECIPE

Pasta is a traditional Italian cuisine. Prepared using variety of vegetables, stocks, sauces, creams etc. Have given little twist using Dal instead of sauce. Dal is a staple food in India and it’s healthy and easily available option. This is kid friendly healthy recipe.

Ingredients Serving: 3

  1. Dried whole wheat spaghetti pasta - 150gms( any type of pasta can be used)
  2. Salt a pinch
  3. water 2-3 cups
  4. Grated Cheese – ¼th cup.
  5. For Dal- Masoor Dal – ½ cup
  6. Oil – 1 – 2 tbsp
  7. Cumin seeds – 1/2tsp
  8. Mustard seeds – 1/2tsp
  9. Tomato – 1 no finely chopped
  10. Coriander - 2tbsp finely chopped
  11. Green chilli finely chopped - 1/2tsp
  12. Minced garlic – 1tbsp
  13. Garam masala - ½ tsp
  14. Turmeric powder – a pinch.
  15. Tamarind paste – 1/4th tsp (optional)
  16. salt as per taste
  17. Water as required for cooking
  18. Garnish – Grated cheese Tomato sauce

Instructions

  1. Rinse the masoor dal thoroughly, until water is clear.
  2. In a pressure cooker heat oil, add cumin, mustard seeds. Let it splutter. Add finely chopped onion. cook until tender and translucent but not browned.
  3. Add garlic and green chilli. Continue to fry until garlic is fully cooked.
  4. Add chopped tomatoes mix well and let it cook for 3-4 min. Add salt, garam masala, a pinch turmeric powder, chopped coriander and tamarind paste. Mix well.
  5. Add washed masoor dal. Mix well. Add 2 cups water. cook it till 3-4 whistles. Let it cool completely.
  6. Check the consistency, If required add little water to keep the dal loose. It should be thick creamy texture.
  7. Taste and add more salt if needed. Blend dal in a blender to puree.
  8. For pasta - Take 3cups of water in a pan, add a tiny pinch of salt and bring back to the boil.
  9. Add the spaghetti and cook according to packet instructions – you want to cook your pasta until it is al dente. This means that it should be soft enough to eat, but still have a bit of a bite and firmness to it
  10. Once the pasta is done, drain off to a colander and rinse in cold water. Set aside
  11. Assembling – In a hot pan add pureed dal. Add cooked spaghetti pasta. Mix well.
  12. Add grated cheese. Cook till cheese melts.
  13. Serve hot. Garnish with tomato sauce and grated cheese.
