ABOUT Classic Goan Fish Curry RECIPE

A zero oil indulgence. This is a traditional Goan fish curry blended with spices ,coconut milk and the kokum bringing out the flavor of the fish beautifully which is so authentic, else can be called the soul food all over Goa and the coastal regions. Serve it with a plate of steam rice.

Ingredients Serving: 6

  1. 6-8 mackerel fish cleaned and cut into two
  2. 3-4 green chillies
  3. 1 medium onion, roughly sliced
  4. 1 cup fresh coconut milk
  5. 1 tbsp Coriander Seeds
  6. 1 tsp cumin seeds
  7. 2-3 cloves garlic
  8. 4-6 dried red chillies or peppers
  9. 1 tsp peppercorns
  10. 1 inch ginger roughly chopped
  11. 1 tsp turmeric powder
  12. 1 tbsp Tamarind Pulp
  13. 2-3 cups warm water
  14. 2 tbsp chopped coriander and few curry leaves

Instructions

  1. Marinte the fish with salt, lemon juice and 1 tsp of red chili powder
  2. In a grinder combine all the ingredients except for coconut milk, tamarind pulp and water. Add salt according to taste and 1/3 cup fresh grated coconut for that extra flavor and blend it into a fine paste. Add little water if required .
  3. In a deep bottom wide sauce pan pour this paste, add the required water and salt and cook for about 20- 30 minutes on a low to medium heat.
  4. Once the curry get its texture, give a nice stir add in the coconut milk, tamarind and the marinated fish
  5. Cover it and let it boil for another 10 mins. Once the sauce is properly cooked and reduced, turn off the heat and garnish with some fresh coriander leaves.
