Yoghurt based onion kadhi which is very easy to make and a great accompaniment for hot steaming rice.

Ingredients Serving: 4

  1. Curd-2 cups
  2. Gram flour(besan)-1 tbsp
  3. Water-1 &1/2 cups
  4. Onion-1(big)+1(fried onion)
  5. Garlic-8 cloves
  6. Ginger-1/2 inch
  7. Green chilli-2
  8. salt
  9. Turmeric-1/2 tsp
  10. chilli powder-1 tsp
  11. Garam masala-1/2 tsp
  12. Mustard seeds-1 tsp
  13. cumin Seeds-1 tsp
  14. Fenugreek seeds-1/2 tsp
  15. Curry leaves-6
  16. coriander Powder-1 tsp
  17. oil-1 tbsp
  18. coriander for garnishing


  1. Take yoghurt and gram flour in a big bowl and blend.Add water also and blend properly.
  2. Now add salt and keep to boil.
  3. Keep stiring at regular intervals.
  4. Meanwhile on other gas prepare the seasoning.Take oil in a small pan.
  5. Add mustard seeds.When they crackle add cumin seeds and fenugreek seeds.
  6. Then add asafoetida,curry leaves.
  7. Add ginger ,garlic and green chill paste.
  8. Saute for 30 seconds and then add finely chopped onions.
  9. Cover and let it cook.
  10. Prepare birista( crisp fried onions from one onion).I made it in microwave as very less oil is needed.
  11. Now after our onions are cooked,add turmeric,chilli powder,coriander powder,garam masala and then put this in boiling yoghurt curry.
  12. Add the fried onions also.Reserve some for garnishing.
  13. Cook for 5 minutes and serve hot garnished with some fried onions and coriander.
