Sweet and Sour Tamarind Fish

ABOUT Sweet and Sour Tamarind Fish RECIPE

This is one dish I love making on weekends. Bengalis rely on quick to make but very tasty and rich lunch specialities. Here is a part of the lunch that is served often at my home, 'Gurjali fish' in a sweet and sour spicy tamarind gravy.

Ingredients Serving: 4

  1. 8 lengthwise pieces of Gurjali fish (firm flesh fish)
  2. Salt as needed
  3. 4-5 tablespoons of mustard oil
  4. 2 medium sized onions ground to a fine paste
  5. 1 potato (cut lengthwise resembling a half moon)
  6. 6 green chiliies (3 for the onion paste and 3 for gravy)
  7. 1/2 teaspoon of turmeric powder
  8. 1/2 teaspoon of red chili powder
  9. 1 teaspoon of garlic-ginger paste each
  10. Water as needed
  11. 1 tsp of instant tamarind paste
  12. 1 and half tsp of sugar

Instructions

  1. Heat oil in a pan and fry the fish pieces and potatoes lightly. Keep them aside.
  2. Now add the onion and green chili paste, fry it in the remaining oil gently until you see the oil separate.
  3. Now add in whole green chilies, salt, turmeric, red chili powder, ginger and garlic paste and a little bit of water. Lower the flame and stir until the oil separates and the masalas are cooked well.
  4. Next pour in the tamarind extract, add in the fish pieces. At the same time pour a cup of water, cover it with a lid, let it simmer and cook.
  5. Now add in salt and sugar. Lower the heat and put a lid on the wok. Cook until the potatoes become soft and a thick gravy has formed with the oil leaving the sides.
  6. Serve hot with steamed white rice and loads of love.
