ABOUT Kandyachi Bhakri/Onion Bhakri RECIPE

Bhakri is a flat unleavened bread often used in Goan cuisines. Kandyachi Bhakri is often prepared as a breakfast item and served with spicy chutney. This recipe was passed to me by my mother.

Ingredients Serving: 3

  1. 2 big Onions (finely cut)
  2. 2 Green Chillies (finely cut)
  3. 1/2 cup Coriander leaves (cut)
  4. 1 1/2 cup fine Rava (Sooji)
  5. 2 tbsp freshly grated Coconut
  6. 2 tbsp Rice flour
  7. Salt to taste
  8. 1 tsp Turmeric Powder
  9. 1 tsp Red Chilli Powder
  10. Water as required

Instructions

  1. Mix the finely cut onion, green chillies, coriander leaves, grated coconut, turmeric powder, chilli powder and rice flour.
  2. Add sooji and mix well. The mixture will be crumbly. Add water little by little and mix till it becomes like a thick dosa batter consistency.
  3. Cover and keep for 10 minutes for the sooji to become soft. Heat the tava and pour 1 tsp oil.
  4. Pour a handful of the batter on the tava and shape it in the form of a round bhakri. Dip your hands in water for smoothening the bhakri.
  5. Close the tava with a lid and let the bhakri cook on a low flame for about 5 minutes. Turn the bhakri. Pour a little oil. Do not close the lid.
  6. Let the bhakri cook for 2 minutes. Now increase the flame to medium and let it cook for another 4 minutes. Turn and cook for some more time.
  7. Serve hot with Red chilly-Garlic Chutney.
