ABOUT Girmit / Puffed rice snack RECIPE

North Karnataka Special Snack; I learnt this recipe from a Girmit vendor at Aihole Karnataka.

Ingredients Serving: 3

  1. Puffed rice : 150 g
  2. Cooking Oil : 2 Spoons
  3. Cumin seeds : 1/2 Spoon
  4. Ground nuts : 4 Spoons
  5. Onion (Big) : 1 No
  6. Carrot : 1 No
  7. Tomato (Big) : 1 No
  8. Sprouts : 1/2 Cup
  9. Coriander leaves(chopped) : 1/2 Cup
  10. Chilli powder : According to taste
  11. Cumin powder : 1/4 Spoon
  12. Coriander powder : 1 Spoon
  13. Garam masala powder : 1/2 Spoon (optional)
  14. Lemon juice : 2 Spoon
  15. Dalia split : 1/4 Cup
  16. Salt
  17. Mixture/ sev : 1/2 Cup (optional)

Instructions

  1. Chop onion, tomato & coriander leaves. Keep aside.
  2. Dry roast dalia and grind to fine powder, keep aside.
  3. Grate Carrot.
  4. Heat oil in wok, add cumin seeds while seeds changes its colour, add ground nuts. Let splutter.
  5. Add chopped onions & fry till they turn pink.
  6. Add grated carrot & sauté.
  7. Add chopped tomato & sprouts. sauté. Add coriander leaves, mix well.
  8. Add chilli powder, coriander powder, cumin powder, garam masala powder &dalia split powder. Mix well. Add salt & mix well. Switch off the flame.
  9. Add lemon juice & mix properly.
  10. In a big bowl , take puffed rice & add 3-4 cups of water.Mix well & squeeze puffed rice to remove water.
  11. Take out squeezed puffed rice & add to wok.
  12. Mix well & garnish with coriander leaves & mixture/sev. Serve.
