ABOUT Greek Pastitsio RECIPE

A classic Greek dish that consists of pastry, beef, and pasta layers that have been baked to perfection.

Ingredients Serving: 6

  1. 2 and 1/2 cup penne pasta
  2. 1 cup Parmesan cheese, grated
  3. 1 medium sized onion, finely chopped
  4. 400 grams of tomatoes, pureed
  5. 3 garlic cloves, minced
  6. 650 grams of ground sirloin
  7. 2 tbsp butter, melted
  8. 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon, grounded
  9. 1/2 teaspoon salt
  10. 1 cup Parmesan cheese, shredded and divided
  11. Bechamel Sauce Ingredients:
  12. 75 grams all-purpose flour
  13. 115 grams butter
  14. 1/4 teaspoon pepper
  15. 1/2 teaspoon salt
  16. 2 Eggs
  17. 1 liter milk

Instructions

  1. Cook the pasta according to the package directions. Then drain the pasta, put in some butter and parmesan cheese and toss it well. Put this pasta into a a greased 13x 9-in baking dish.
  2. Preheat the oven to 176° Celsius.
  3. Take a pan and heat some oil, put in the beef and onion together and cook it on a medium flame for 8-10 minutes. Continue cooking till the beef changes colour and crumble the beef. Next add the garlic and cook for another 2 minutes.
  4. Pour in the tomato puree along with salt and cinnamon and cook for another 4-5 minutes. Then gently spread this beef mixture over the pasta and sprinkle 1/2 cup of shredded Parmesan cheese on top.
  5. In a separate pan, melt in the butter. Put in the flour, salt and pepper together and stir for a few seconds, gradually pour in the milk. Bring this to a boil and cook for 1-2 minutes till this sauce thickens.
  6. Take a small bowl, break in the eggs and add a tiny amount of the flour mixture. Then pour this into the pan while whisking constantly. Bring it to a boil and stir for 2 minutes. Pour this over the beef and sprinkle with remaining cheese.
  7. Cover and bake for 20 minutes. Then uncover and bake for 30-40 minutes or till it turns into a a golden brown colour.
  8. Serve warm for best taste.
