ABOUT Traditional Dahi Vada / Thayir Vada RECIPE

Traditional south Indian vada uses gravy made with coconut, green chillies and curd as seasoning for vada. The gravy we call it thayir or thengai pachadi. Now a days to make it easier people use curd alone. It is usually served in south Indian marriages.

Ingredients Serving: 4

  1. For Vada Urad dal 1/2 cup
  2. Ginger small piece
  3. Green chillies 2
  4. Salt
  5. curry leaves
  6. Coriander leaves
  7. chopped onion
  8. For thengai pachadi
  9. Coconut
  10. Green chilli 1
  11. Hing
  12. Thick curd
  13. Salt
  14. For seasoning coconut oil
  15. Mustard
  16. curry leaves
  17. Coriander leaves

Instructions

  1. Soak Urad dal for 30 minutes
  2. Add Urad dal, Green chillies, Ginger and Salt to blender. Add little water. Grind to smooth paste.
  3. Add Curry leaves, Coriander leaves and Onion. Mix well.
  4. Make Small Vadas and Deep fry them.
  5. Add Coconut, Green chillies, hing and salt to blender. Grind them.
  6. Now Add curd to coconut mixture and blend using pulse. Make a thick gravy.
  7. Add seasoning made with Coconut oil, Mustard, Jeera and Curry leaves. Also add chopped coriander leaves.
  8. Add thengai pachadi / gravy to Vadas. Rest it for 5 mins.
  9. Time to serve Thayir Vada

Can we use Refined oil in the place of coconut oil?
